The Gifu Great Buddha and Shoboji
Temple Completed some 170 years ago, this Great Buddha is the lagest dry
lacquer statue in Japan. A great ginkgo tree was used to make its central
pillar, while the framework made by weaving together a network of wooden
ribs. The body was made from high-quality bamboo and clay. Covered with
Buddist scripture, the surface was coated with lacquer and finished in
gold leaf. The image of Healing Buddha, said to have been housed at the
former Kawate Shoboji Temple, is permanently housed at a site within the
Great Buddha.
